The Farrelly brothers' Dumb and Dumber is one of the funniest comedies from the '90s. Its rapid-fire gag rate is comparable to Airplane!, while Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels made an on-screen pairing for ages in the lead roles of Lloyd and Harry.

But as with most of the Farrellys' work – and a lot of comedy that's at least a couple of decades old – there are some scenes in Dumb and Dumber that haven't aged particularly gracefully. Still, it's fared a lot better than most comedies of its era. For all the jokes that haven't stood the test of time, there are even more that have.

10 Still Hilarious: The Most Annoying Sound In The World

Jim Carrey ad-libbed this moment when the actors were riffing scenarios for Harry and Lloyd to get on their hitchhiker's nerves. Carrey almost breaks during the setup as he says, "Wanna hear the most annoying sound in the world?" and then screeches incessantly in Mike Starr's ear.

Jeff Daniels breaks just before it cuts to Starr's agitated expression. He reaches for his gun to kill them then and there, but they see a whole family of hitchhikers at the side of the road and Lloyd says, "Pick 'em up!"

9 Aged Horribly: "I Hate Goodbyes!"

When Lloyd picks up Mary to take her to the airport, he instantly falls in love. To Mary, Lloyd is just her driver, but Lloyd thinks Mary is his soulmate. When he drops her off and she goes to leave, he says, "How about a hug?"

Mary reluctantly embraces him and he holds on for way too long as she uncomfortably waits for him to let go. It's a pretty uneasy watch.

8 Still Hilarious: Lloyd Totally Redeems Himself

Harry is furious when Lloyd accidentally drives a sixth of the way across America in the wrong direction. Now, they're stranded without enough money to get to Aspen or get home, so Harry storms off.

Later, Lloyd pulls up on a tiny moped, having traded in Harry's van, and Harry says, "Just when I think you couldn't possibly be any dumber, you go and do something like this...and totally redeem yourself!"

7 Aged Horribly: Harry Massages His Masseuse

When the guys discover that Mary's briefcase is filled with cash, they start spending it like there's no tomorrow. Harry gets a massage, but midway through it, he asks his masseuse if he can give her a massage instead.

What follows is a sleazy, crass, Carry On-adjacent, mercifully brief bit in which he wears her much-too-small uniform and massages her bare back with his forehead.

6 Still Hilarious: "We Landed On The Moon!"

On his way out of the hotel bar after being stood up for a date that was never actually arranged, Lloyd spots a 1969 headline about the Moon landing and is astonished. He says, "No way...that's great! We landed on the Moon!"

This line was reportedly ad-libbed by Jim Carrey, as were a lot of the movie's funniest lines. The beauty of this joke is that it only gets funnier with time.

5 Aged Horribly: Tricking The Blind Kid

When Harry and Lloyd are leaving Rhode Island and Harry is suspicious about Lloyd's new walking-around money, he questions him about it and finds out he taped the head back onto Harry's decapitated parakeet Petey and sold it to a blind kid in their neighborhood.

The joke is admittedly paid off pretty well when it's covered on a Dateline-type show later in the movie and Mary is horrified, wondering who would be so sick, then Lloyd shows up at her door. Still, this kind of 'joke' at the expense of blind people is unacceptable.

4 Still Hilarious: The Atomic Peppers

When Mental comes back into the diner, ready to kill Harry and Lloyd as he thinks they're a pair of criminal masterminds, they tell him what they're doing with Mary's briefcase, unwittingly revealing that they're just a pair of idiots. So, the future looks bright for Mental – except they covered his burger in atomic peppers.

He takes one bite out of his burger and his face turns bright red and he starts sweating profusely and collapses on the floor. Lloyd and Harry initially laugh at him before realizing he needs medical attention. Lloyd does terrible CPR and Harry mistakes rat poison for his meds, so he dies.

3 Aged Horribly: Lloyd Lifts Up Mary's Dress

While Lloyd is driving through the night, he's distracted from the road by fantasizing about what will happen when he gets to Aspen and gives Mary her briefcase.

He imagines showing up at her door and giving her the briefcase and while she's hugging him, he lifts up her dress to see if she's wearing underwear. Sure, it's in a fantasy sequence, but it's still pretty creepy.

2 Still Hilarious: Lloyd's Extra Pair Of Gloves

When Harry and Lloyd arrive in Aspen, they have no money, so they resort to sleeping rough in a snow-covered park. Harry tries to warm his shaking bare hands on a fire, telling Lloyd that he can't feel them anymore.

Lloyd casually says, "Here, maybe you should wear these extra gloves." He takes off his gloves to reveal another pair underneath and says, "My hands are getting kinda sweaty." Understandably, Harry is furious.

1 Aged Horribly: Attempted Sexual Assault Played For Laughs

Lloyd unwittingly walks into a premeditated sexual assault attempt in a gas station bathroom. He sees that someone has written on the wall: "FOR MANLY LOVE BE HERE ON MARCH 25TH AT 2:15 AM SHARP." Lloyd checks his Casino watch (a great little detail, Lloyd has a knockoff of a Casio, an already-inexpensive watch) and it's exactly 2:15am on March 25th.

Seabass bursts into the stall and Lloyd cowers in the corner, trying to go to a happy place. Out of the context of a comedy, this scenario is pretty terrifying. He's saved at the last second by Harry bursting into the stall to put out the fire consuming his jeans.
